Field Notes: Sometimes things just work out. This trial was very even, it was seeded a bit later and had no flea-beetle damage, giving it a great start. These conditions resulted in an excellent, and evenly yielding trial. The trial was all swathed prior to harvest. but because of a range of maturity, it was swathed in 3 different mornings, totaling 7 days from earliest to later maturing.

Field Notes: This trial experienced some hail damage just prior to flowering the hail had damaged stems and leaves that delayed maturity and also left opportunity for a flush of weeds so a third pass of roundup was applied, that turned out to be a great decision as field recovered over time and weed control was excellent. Once again 2018 fell short of rainfall later in the season for soybeans. S006W5 was used as a check that yielded fairly similar across the trial that tells us the varieties were well represented with the exception of a small corner on the north east that may have affected block 4

Plants under stress
Sunday, February 27th, 2011
If you were able to seed that low land its more than likely turning a bit yellow, poor roots and nitrogen not available, what can you do ? If weather was to change top dressing plants can help get your crop back on track. The tough one is applying herbicides to crops under stress only increases the stress. With weed pressure high there is no great solution ,staging , wind and wet fields are common problems.
CLUBROOT
Thursday, June 10th, 2010
Clubroot is a soil borne disease affecting crucifer crops such as canola, mustard, cabbage, broccoli, etc. It is caused by Protist Plasmodiophorabrassicae, an obligate parasite which infects the roots of host plants and produces club-shaped galls that restrict the flow of water and nutrients to the plant above the ground, plants may show symptoms of wilting, stunting, yellowing or premature ripening which causes shriveled seeds. Yield losses from Clubroot are significant. It cannot be controlled chemically to date, however Dekalb has introduced 74 54 RR with resistance. Other seed companies are investing into research as well.Spores can live in soil for 10-20 years. The good news is Manitoba soils with a PH > 6.5 are less susceptible to clubroot, but with our canola rotation we are possibly increasing the risk of this or any disease in our area. Imagine not being able to grow canola on your farm!
